The Caprock Escarpment forms the eastern boundary of the LLano Esticado. It is not very spectacular by world standards, but when one's senses are dulled by the monotony of the seemingly endless plains, it does seem truly spectacular to suddenly encounter a thousand foot cliff. Palo Duro Canyon S.P. is accessible only from the High Plains...there is not even a hint to its presence until you're less than a mile from the rim. Even then, you have to be paying attention to notice that there is a rather large gap in the land on the horizon.
The brilliance of colors is stunning when the soil is wet, but the red mud adheres to everything that touches it.
